Tab Groups

Tab groups in Firefox keep your browser tabs neatly organized so you can switch between work, research, and everything else without losing track. Instead of one endless tab strip, you can group tabs into labeled collections that match the way you think and work.

What are tab groups?

Tab groups let you keep related tabs together in a single view. You can give each tab group a group name, choose a colored circle, and decide which pages belong there — work-related tabs in one group, planning or entertainment in another. Each group tab sits on the tab bar, so you can see where you are at a glance and collapse a group when you need more room.

With native tab groups in Firefox, you can:

  • Keep organized tabs for different projects or tasks
  • Jump from a single tab in one group to another without losing your current tab
  • Reduce visual noise by collapsing groups you’re not using
  • Personalize your browsing experience with colors and labels

You can reopen any collapsed tab group with a single click when you’re ready to use it again.

How tab groups work

Firefox includes tab groups as a built-in feature, so you don’t need a tab groups extension or an automatic tab grouping extension to get started. From any individual tab, you can add it to a new group or move it into an existing one. If you already have an existing tab group, just drag the tab into it. You can group tabs that are already next to each other, drag an existing group along the tab strip, or ungroup tabs when you want to go back to regular tabs.

It’s easy to:

  • Open tab groups with a click on the group tab
  • Start a new group and add multiple tabs to it as you browse
  • Move a selected tab into a different group or window
  • Use pinned tabs to access everyday tools alongside your groups
  • Open a new tab directly inside a group so related tabs stay together

If you like vertical tabs, Firefox makes sure tab groups work smoothly in the sidebar too, so your grouping tabs layout feels consistent whether your tabs live at the top or side of the window.

Stay organized across devices

Sign in to Firefox and turn on Sync to keep your tab groups available across devices. You can open a session on your laptop, check a single tab on your phone, and return to the same group later on your desktop. Sync is designed to encrypt your data, so your browsing stays protected.

Sync can share tab groups, history, bookmarks, and shortcuts between Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. You choose what to sync in the Sync settings, so this feature fits the way you already browse.

Why use tab groups

Too many open tab rows can make it hard to focus. Tab groups help you turn all those browser tabs into tidy sections that match a specific task or project. When you group tabs by topic, it’s easier to see which set you’re working in and which one can wait until later.

Tab groups are especially useful when you:

  • Separate work-related tabs from personal browsing
  • Keep research sources and drafts together for a class or big report
  • Plan a trip with flights, maps, and guides in one organized group
  • Want your tab bar to show only what you need right now

Compared with other approaches, like Opera One and its Tab Island feature, Firefox focuses on simple, predictable tab grouping that respects your privacy and gives you control.

Great for any browsing style

Whether you use multiple windows or keep everything in one, tab groups adapt to how you browse. You might keep one tab group for work, one for school, and one for hobbies. During a busy session, you can open tab groups you need and leave the rest collapsed.

Firefox supports keyboard shortcuts and address bar search that work seamlessly with tab groups, so you can jump straight to the group or individual tab you want. And if you prefer add-ons, you can install a tab group manager to automate tasks, share tab groups with others, or customize how groups look and behave.

However you use them, tab groups help keep your browsing space more organized and easier to manage, with the flexibility to grow from a single tab and a couple of groups into a full system for organizing the way you use the web.
